Petitioning, collecting signatures to make a change, can be a powerful tool for residents in Buffalo. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to use official petitions to make your voice heard and create change in city government. We’ll break down the different types of petitions available to residents: what they do, who can sign them, how many signatures are required, and where and when petitions must be submitted.
We’ll look at three broad categories of petitioning opportunities: legislative, land use, and quality-of-life. Together, we’ll examine real examples of how Buffalo residents have used petitions to challenge local laws, amend the City Charter, influence zoning and land use decisions, address city infrastructure, and raise concerns about neighborhood conditions.
The petitioning process can be technical, and getting the details right matters. We’ll walk through the process step-by-step, discuss requirements and potential obstacles, and talk about how to organize a successful petition drive. We’ll also discuss strategies for identifying eligible voters, gathering valid signatures, and building community support.
Participants will have an opportunity to think through an issue in their own community and identify whether petitioning could be an effective advocacy tool. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a better understanding of what they can petition for, how the process works, and what it takes to turn signatures into meaningful civic action.
