There will be a town hall on lead poisoning prevention Thursday, June 8, from 6pm to 7:45pm at the Merriweather Library, 1324 Jefferson Avenue.
The town hall offers a chance to learn about the latest science on lead poisoning, current prevention work being done by Erie County and the City of Buffalo, and promising strategies to reduce lead poisoning, based on best practices from Rochester and other cities. Most importantly, the event offers local residents a chance to offer their own ideas and priorities for a community action plan on lead poisoning.
The evening kicks off with an original poem about lead poisoning by local poet Aitina Fareed Cooke.
Speakers include
· Cara Matelliano, Vice-President, Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo
· Gale Burstein, Commissioner, Erie County Department of Health
· Louis Petrucci, Assistant Director, City of Buffalo Permits and Inspections
· Katarzyna Kordas, Associate Professor, Public Health, University at Buffalo
· Elizabeth McDade, Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning (Rochester)
· Leonard Merritt, Lead Paint Program Coordinator, City of Rochester
The town hall is presented by CGR and the Partnership for the Public Good, which have been commissioned by a group of local funders to produce a lead poisoning prevention action plan. The local funders are the City of Buffalo, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the Health Foundation of Central and Western New York, the John R. Oishei Foundation, the Tower Foundation, and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County.
The town hall is free and open to the public; all are welcome and encouraged to attend. Anyone with questions, or anyone who would like interpreting services or other accommodations may contact Colleen Stapleton, Partnership for the Public Good, 246-1707, colleen@ppgbuffalo.org.
