WNYCAIC Seeking Part-time Staff

The Buffalo/WNY chapter of the NY Campaign for Alternatives to Isolated Confinement (http://nycaic.org) is seeking a part-time staff person for Sep 2017 – May 2018. Funding is assured, for this period, for one position of approximately 12 hours per week.

Responsibilities include

(1) On an ongoing, regular basis, work to arrange public education on the issue of solitary confinement, including occasions where members of the chapter could speak to religious, labor, or other community groups.
(2) As needed, help with the administrative functions of the chapter: maintaining email list and Facebook page, building lists of contacts and volunteers, sending out meeting announcements, helping the Treasurer prepare financial reports, etc.
(3) At chapter meetings, participate in decision-making about the strategies for building support in WNY and among local legislators for reforming solitary confinement.

Preferred Qualifications
• Be committed to ending the torture of solitary confinement.
• Have access to reliable transportation and be willing to do considerable local travel (expenses reimbursed).
• Be willing to attend evening and weekend meetings and events (time doing so will be paid work time)
• Self-starter, willing to take initiative, including contacting strangers
• Good writing and speaking skills
• Ability to work effectively with people of varied races, ethnicities, religions, nationalities, gender and sexual identities.
• Well-organized and attentive to detail
• Experience, personally or through family and friends, of incarceration, and particularly of solitary confinement
• Understanding of criminal justice issues
• Sufficient technical aptitude to quickly learn how to do Facebook and a little website work, manage e-mail lists, and handle data in Excel
