Each week, PPG summarizes important takeaways from the major Buffalo Common Council meetings. We also include information from Council meetings related to our Community Agenda items

For this summary, we will focus on the Regular Meeting. The Regular Meeting is the Common Council's primary meeting, where they make official decisions on issues.

The Regular Meeting opened by recognizing Pastor James Giles for his work in response to the tragedy on May 14. Common Council referred the appointment of Assistant Corporation Counsel II to the Civil Service Committee. The body also sent a resolution to the Education Committee to support integrating the D.A.R.E. Program into Buffalo Public Schools.

The Council adopted the Buffalo Common Council Language and Disability Access Plan. The comprehensive plan will be on the Common Council website and include a series of resources and policy goals. Council Member Rivera thanked the staff for working on the initiative. Council President Pridgen acknowledged Buffalo's changing landscape and the need to make information accessible in more languages.

Common Council adopted a resolution to initiate a public hearing for two structures in the Cobblestone Historic District utilizing eminent domain procedure law. Council Member Nowakowski stressed the intention of evoking the controversial right of government is to prevent blight and preserve the integrity of the Cobblestone Historic District. He notes these properties have been in Housing Court since he was in high school without any progress or accountability on the owner's behalf to address the properties' conditions.

Council President Pridgen stressed the resolution does not trigger eminent domain but a possible public hearing in 90 days. Council Member Rivera echoed Council Member Nowakowski's acknowledgment of past council members who wanted to prevent speculators from intentionally purchasing properties to use for financial gain (i.e., parking lots) once they fall apart.
