Writing for the Media: Letters to the Editor, Op-Eds, and Press Releases

Partnership for the Public Good / Cornell ILR Offices
617 Main Street
Suite 300
BUFFALO, NY 14203

Learn how to effectively write for the media, with our tips on how to write good letters to the editor and opinion pieces.

At this workshop, we’ll also review the different types of letters accepted by our local news sources, and how to submit a letter or op-ed piece. We’ll discuss how to engage the editorial board of The Buffalo News, which determines what the paper's position will be on certain topics.

Dawn Bracely and Elizabeth Licata, editorial writers at The Buffalo News, will join us for tips and techniques on how to craft your message.

This workshop will be hybrid, with spots for 20 participants in our classroom at 617 Main Street and more participants via Zoom. Register to join in-person by emailing BuffaloCommons@cornell.edu; register to join on Zoom at this link.

This is part of a three-part series of workshops on working with the media; register for one, or join for all three:

1) Working with the Media: Get Your Story in Print
Wednesday, October 5, 12:30 – 2pm

2) Writing for the Media: Letters to the Editor, Op-Eds, and Press Releases
Wednesday, October 12, 12:30 – 2pm

3) Speaking to the Media: TV and Radio Interviews
Wednesday, October 19, 12:30 – 2pm

Workshops are free and open to PPG partners and the public. Because in-person space is limited, and because we’re providing lunch for in-person participants, please consider in-person registration a firm commitment to attend. Please let us know in advance if you can no longer make it, and we’ll offer your spot to someone else.

Please email andrea@ppgbuffalo.org with any questions.
